Huaraches

Today we talk game day eats, Huaraches! We are testing recipes for our Super Bowl Fiesta and I knew this was the perfect time to try out huaraches.

Huaraches are flattened ovals of masa shaped to resemble the sole of a Huarache (Mexican sandal).

Similar to a sope, hauaraches can be served small as an appetizer of made large enough to resemble a pizza.

Traditional huaraches are filled with beans and fried until crisp.

These huaraches easily come together with the help of Maseca and can be rolled out in any size. Cook over a hot griddle and your set.

Topping options are endless: beans, cheese, rajas, salsa, nopales, fajitas, carne asada. etc.

These were a hit in our house, slathered with refried beans, rajas de poblano and onions, a sprinkle of cotijo cheese.  Enjoy!

Huaraches
Author: Vianney Rodriguez
Ingredients
  • 2 cups of MASECA®
  • 1¼ cups of water
  • ½ tsp. of salt
Instructions
  1. In a bowl, mix the MASECA® flour with water and salt, until dough is smooth and doesn't stick to your hands.
  2. If dough feels dry, add teaspoons of water, one at a time.
  3. Once dough is ready, cover with a damp towel so it does not get dry.
  4. Divide the dough into nine equal portions and form into little balls.
  5. Take two plastic sheets to flatten the little balls with your hands, forming a huarache.
  6. Cook each huarache on a hot griddle, for two minutes on each side.

You know the similarities between the foods of the ‘old cuisines’ never fails to amaze me. I can think of at least a couple of recipes from Indian cooking that use the same concept. Although nothing can come close to the flavor of real masa 🙂 GORGEOUS as always Vianney!
