Agua preparada made with agua mineral, fresh lime juice and plenty of Tajin combine to create a refreshing cooler that helps to beat the Texas heat.

Agua Mineral Preparada served with spices

Agua Preparada translates to “prepared water,” served over ice in a glass rimmed with chamoy and Tajín, it is especially popular in northeastern Mexico and South Texas, notably in border towns.

Agua preparada, a refreshing Mexican beverage made with sparkling mineral water (like Topo Chico) and other flavorings like lime juice and Tajín, can be found at various locations, including fruterias, Mexican restaurants, and even some bars. You can also find it at some “mini-markets” or “plugas”.

“Agua mineral” translates to mineral water in English. It refers to natural water that contains dissolved minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, sourced from underground springs. Mineral water can be still or sparkling (carbonated).

Why You Will Love Agua Preparada

  • In Tejas the summer months can be brutal. Hydration is key – an icy glass of agua preparada hits the spot.
  • Mocktail or Cocktail – Agua preparada can easily be both. Add a splash of juice for a fun mocktail version and a splash of tequila for a fun spiked agua.
  • Make it your own – pineapple, watermelon, mango or chamoy agua preparada works well with any flavor you add. I am trying cucumber and a spicy version soon.
  • DIY agua preparada bar is a beautiful addition to your next party or brunch.
