I grew up eating duros. My mami made them for us on the weekend. She served them with fresh lime juice and hot sauce – us kids loved this spicy snack.
Today I am giving duros a sweet touch that is perfect for entertaining.

I knew I wanted to pair duros with pineapple, so I sliced my fresh pineapple in half, that’s when it hit me.
What If serve the duros inside the pineapple half? I placed the pineapple on a platter, filled with the sweet duros, topped with fresh pineapple, and drizzled the warm dulce de leche at the table. My girls loved it.
Duros can be fried at home, or you can purchase prepared duros at your local Mexican supermarket.
WHAT ARE DUROS?
Duros are a Mexican snack that are made of wheat flour. They are also known as duritos, durros, chicharrones, churittos or duros de harina.
Duros are a dark orange color and when fried they puff up three times their size while becoming lighter in color.
Duros can be purchased in assorted sizes and shapes. Duros are sold by street vendors but can also be purchased at Mexican supermarkets.
Prepared duros can be purchased at Mexican supermarkets.

HOW TO FRY DUROS
Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
Heat oil in a large skillet.
Carefully add duros in batches to hot oil, use spoon to stir duros to ensure they cook evenly.
Duros will begin puffing up and fry quickly.
Remove duros, place on paper towels to drain.
HOW TO SERVE DUROS
Duros are typically fried, then served topped with fresh lime juice and Mexican hot sauce such as Valentina or Tapito or sprinkled with ground chile.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE DUROS WITH PINEAPPLE AND DULCE DE LECHE
1 fresh pineapple โ for this recipe we are only using 1 half of the pineapple, use remaining pineapple to make agua de pina.
duros โ look for duros in the spice aisle or produce aisle of your Mexican supermarket.
Oil for frying

dulce de leche
- 1 fresh pineapple
- 20 duros
- Oil for frying
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Dulce de leche

Slice pineapple in half.

Run a knife around pineapple, then with spoon remove pineapple flesh from pineapple.

Dice pineapple, set aside.

Line a baking sheet with paper towels.

Combine sugar and ground cinnamon.
