Agua De Piña
We have been spending a lot of time outside on the slip and slide, not me, but the kiddos. Can you imagine me on a slip and slide? Pretty scary.
The kids slip and I sip, they slide and I sip.
I say it’s a pretty fun time for all involved. Aguas frescas are one of the highlights of summer, that and paletas of course. Fruit blended until shiny smooth, mixed with a bit of water and sweetened to taste. It really doesn’t get any better. While the kids slip into their bathing suits I quickly blend a large pitcher of agua fresca, add ice and we’re set for the afternoon.
I don’t like to overload my agua with sugar or water as I want the fruit flavor to be the star. Taste your pineapple before adding sugar and feel free to add more water if desired. Pineapple and cucumber are also a great flavor combo and you can never go wrong with pineapple and mango.
Agua Frescas (fresh waters) are made with fresh fruit and a mix of vegetables or seeds. Prepared agua fresca drink mixes can be found in the Latin section of your grocery store, but I find many are loaded with sugar and provide very little fruit flavor. Why bother when aguas are so easy to make and can be made seasonal when the fruit/vegetables are at their peak.
- 1 ripe pineapple peeled, cored and diced
- Juice from ½ lime
- 4 cups of water
- ½ cup sugar agave or your choice of sweetener
In a blender add half of the diced pineapple and 1/2 cup water.
Blend until smooth and strain.
Repeat with the second half of pineapple and strain.
Add fresh pineapple juice, lime juice, water and sugar to large pitcher and stir.
Taste and adjust for desired sweetness.
Serve over ice.
