Our tamalada is this weekend – the masa is prepped, the husks are soaking and I am so excited to Welcome the entire familia to our home.
Every year I set up a Christmas Bar. Last year I served ponche margaritas, this year I am serving guava margaritas.
My Abuelito loved guavas, he had a guava tree in his backyard. He cared for the guava tree with a sweet tenderness that always made me smile. During the summer when the guavas were at their peak he smelled of heavenly guava nectar. My Abuelita said it was because he ate more than he picked.
I’m serving these fragrant guava margaritas in mini cazuelas de barro. Y’all know my addiction to barro de Mexico, I am obsessed. I often pick up new pieces on my travels, so over the years, I have acquired quite the collection. On a recent trip to Laredo, Texas I picked up the most gorgeous cazuelas. As soon I saw them, I immediately thought about how cool it would be to serve a holiday cocktail for my tamalada guests.
Guava juice, tequila blanco, fresh lime juice and Cointreau combine to create a refreshing guava margarita. I used guava juice to mix up these margaritas, but you can make your own guava juice.
To make guava juice for margaritas: Peel guavas, remove seeds and blend or juice in a juicer. Strain and your set to shake. I prefer to peel y guavas. I find the skin can sometimes add a bitter aftertaste. It is a little time consuming but adds great flavor.
- 1 cup tequila
- 1 ½ cup guava juice
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/2 cup Cointreau
- ice cubes
- For garnish: Orange slices limes slices and guavas
- In a pitcher combine tequila, guava juice, lime juice and Cointreau. Serve in cazuelas filled with ice, garnished with orange, lime and guava slices.
