how to make a pizza cubano pizza

My daughter loves Cubano sandwiches so I thought it would be fun to bake up a pizza featuring the ingredients in a Cubano. A spin on the traditional Cubano sandwich this pizza is delicious.

Making pizza at home doesn’t have to be hard – bring on the store-bought pizza dough.

With store-bought pizza dough you can bake up some amazing homemade pizza without the hassle of making your own dough.  It’s also a great timesaver, not to mention the BEST ingredient to have on-hand for impromptu girls’ night or movie night.

Look for store-bought pizza dough in the deli area, in the refrigerated area next to the biscuits and or find frozen pizza dough in the freezer aisle next to the frozen pie shells or call your local pizzeria and inquire if they sell balls of dough.

I added caramelized onions to the mix, using Texas 1015 sweet onions. Cooked low & slow in a sauté pan over medium heat the onion turn golden brown, sweet, and delicious.

DID YOU KNOW: Texas 1015 Sweet onions grow in the Rio Grande Valley and are farmed by more than 100 family farms. This region has the perfect climate and soil to produce the Texas 1015 onions.

HOW TO MAKE PIZZA CUBANO

First, we make the caramelized onions. You can totally make these babies a few days in advance, store covered in fridge until ready to use.

In a sauté pan over medium heat add olive oil, onions, and salt.

Cook the onions until they are caramelized, about 20 minutes, stirring often.

Remove pan from heat and set aside.

If making in advance, allow onion to cool then store in fridge.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Liberally spray baking sheet with nonstick spray.

Place pizza dough on baking sheet and with hands spread dough in baking sheet.

Mix salsa and mustard in a bowl, spread over crust.

Top with chicken, with hands tear ham and drape over chicken.

Top with caramelized onions and cheese.

Bake until crust in lightly browned, about 12-15 minutes.

Top with cilantro, slice and serve.
