My Bidi Bidi Bom Bom Vanilla Cake inspired by Selena is light, fluffy, and topped with a homemade cream cheese frosting and homemade chocolate letters.
Happy Birthday Selena! Today, on April 16, 1971, Selena was born in Corpus Christi Texas. She was the youngest of three children born to Marcela and Abraham Quintanilla. At eight Selena began a career in a band formed by her father. Bring on the Bidi Bidi Bom Bom Vanilla Cake inspired by Selena!
The band was composed of Selena and her older siblings Abraham junior, who played the base guitar, and Sister Suzette, who played the drums, and Selena was the singer of the band.
The band was called Selena Y Los Dino and she would perform along with her siblings at various bars, restaurants, weddings, fairs, and many other places.
The band was very time consuming for Selena and her siblings, so they never had much of a childhood, but they were encouraged to be dedicated musicians because of determination from their father Abraham.
Selena’s song “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” Released as part of her album Amor Prohibido on July 31, 1994, this song is iconic. But did you ever stop to wonder what the lyrics of the song mean?
In an interview with Don Francisco on Sábado Gigante in 1994, the late Tejana singer talked about the catchy chorus of her new song. She revealed she was the one who wrote the song and what the special meaning behind it was.
“It’s the sound the heart makes when you see a man pass by. It sounds like, ‘Bidi bidi bom bom,’” Selena told Don Francisco. According to Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, she wrote the song shortly after Chris Pérez joined Los Dinos, so it all makes sense, right?
Today I am taking inspiration from one of Selena’s most famous songs to bake up the sweetest homemade birthday cake.
I whipped up a vanilla cake, then topped it loads of cream cheese frosting. My daughter Lisandra took over to decorate the cake with ALL the sprinkles and hand piped chocolate letters.
I love how it turned out!
We baked the cake in 9×13 pan to keep it like a Texas sheet cake, por que Tejas baby.

large eggs
sour cream
vanilla extract
milk
cream cheese
unsalted butter
confectioners’ sugar
pure vanilla extract
Wilton candy melts
Plastic storage bag – Ziploc

Making the chocolate letters and sprinkles are optional, but I wanted to add a pop of color with the letters and little crunch from the chocolate.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE LETTERS AT HOME
Place candy melts in a heatproof bowl. Microwave on 50% power in 15-second bursts, stirring after each burst to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn, until melted and smooth.
The exact timing will vary depending on the amount of chocolate and the wattage of your microwave but will probably take around 1 1/2 minutes.
Cover a plate or baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper.
Pour the melted chocolate into a plastic resealable plastic bag.
Snip the end off close to the tip for thin lettering or a little further up for thicker lettering.
Pipe your letters or words or numbers as desired, gently squeezing the bag from the top toward the tip as you write to keep a slow but continual flow of melted chocolate coming through the tip.
Allow to cool, harden then carefully lift from paper and place on frosted cake.
