Orange Pepper Braised Brisket RECIPE

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of a brisket slowly cooking away in the oven. Growing up after a long day at school, nothing made me happier than walking in and smelling my mamiโ€™s braised brisket.

Mami is all about a fuss free dinner, por que her days began early, and all she wanted was to have dinner checked off her to-do list. I grew up on braised brisket, and today I want to share my take on her recipe.

Simply put, braising is a cooking method that involves a quick, high-heat sear followed by a low and slow simmer in a liquid. This method produces a succulent, juicy meat or vegetable thatโ€™s steeped in flavor.

For this recipe we are going heavy on the citrus and tomato since both ingredients are great for tenderizing brisket.

how to braise brisket

For my orange pepper braised brisket with will:

Sear the brisket โ€“ remove from pot

Cook our aromatics โ€“ onions and garlic

Return the brisket to the pot

Add our liquids โ€“ orange juice and beef broth

Braise โ€“ allow our brisket to cook low and slow

A few simple steps produce a perfectly fork-tender brisket, so good!

Mami will be proud!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO ORANGE PEPPER BRAISED BRISKET

Brisket – Use a 3-to-5-pound brisket that has been trimmed of excess fat.

olive oil โ€“ for searing

Orange Pepper Sazonador seasoning โ€“ I used the one in the photo, pero you can use any orange pepper seasoning, there is so many options.

Onion โ€“ Use white or yellow large onions to make this recipe.

Garlic – Freshly minced garlic adds just the right pop of flavor. You could use garlic powder if you prefer.

beef broth – Use homemade or packaged beef broth.

Juice from 3 oranges, about 1 cup orange juice โ€“ fresh or bottle will work in this recipe.

tomato paste โ€“ adds richness, depth of flavor. I prefer the tubes of tomato paste. I can use what I need and stash it in fridge.

brown sugar – I used light brown sugar, but you could also use dark brown sugar or piloncillo.

Dried bay leaf โ€“ my mami always adds a dried bay leaf to her brisket, so I do too.
