red wine cantaritos cocktail recipe

Today I am giving a traditional Mexican cocktail a fun twist by adding red wine to the mix. Red wine, tequila Blanco fresh citrus juice and grapefruits served in a cantarito cup.

Named after the clay (barro) mug it is served in a Cantarito is hits the spot!

My red wine cantaritos are perfect for entertaining, girls’ night or a even better for Sunday brunch.

WHAT IS A CANTARITO CUP

A cantarito cup is a clay cup made from barro. You can find them at restaurants, bars and roadside stand throughout Mexico.

Made from barro the cantarito cup helps maintain your cocktail icy cold and it is said sipping from the cantarito cup adds a subtle earthy flavor from the barro to your cocktail.

Some restaurants offer a large cantarito jug made table-side for your table.

A server arrives to your table to mix up your cantarito, and the process of shaking up the drink is a fun show.

You can find cantarito cups sold in Latin stores or online. If you cannot find cantaritos cups you can use a any cup you have on-hand to make this cocktail.

HOW TO CURE A CANTARITO CUP

Before using your cantarito cups you will need to cure them. The process is simple and only requires water.

Here’s how to cure a cantarito cup

Remove any price stickers.

Rinse cups the inside and outside of the cup with warm water, not hot water.

Place cups in a stockpot or large pot that is taller than cups.

Fill pot with cold water until cups are submerged.

Allow to soak for 20 minutes.

Dry, and you are set to shake up a cantarito.
