Spicy Watermelon Margarita

Halloween is spooky fun for the kids but, what about the parents?  Shouldn’t we be rewarded for our efforts in helping our kids in their quest for the biggest load of candy?

They want spooky.  I want spicy!  My fellow margarita lovers do I have a treat for you!!

Spicy Watermelon Margaritas.

My family is in town for an extended Halloween fiesta. Four days loaded  with spooky activities, art, baking and KIDS!!  To help the adults stay motivated I knew we would need a kicked up margarita. I wanted a cooling flavor with a hint of spice.  With watermelon season winding down here in the Rio Grande Valley I wanted to squeeze in just one more margarita featuring watermelon.  Cool. Check.  Now I  had to add the spice.  I naturally turned to Serrano chiles.  Agua de Sandia steeped with a serrano chile give this margarita a spicy kick.  Add the tequila and your ready to face a night of hunting for treats! Enjoy! Happy Halloween!!

Crave more spicy heat keep seeds in tact.  Be warned this margarita begins cool and ends warm.

2 cups watermelon juice

1 serrano sliced in half, seeds removed

1 tsp salt

lime wedges

1 cup tequila

1/3 cup fresh lime juice

1/2 cup Cointreau

ice cubes

In a saucepan add watermelon juice, serrano, salt and 1 cup sugar.  Steep over love heat until sugar dissolves.

Taste and add more sugar to your preferred taste.

Remove chile, add to pitcher and allow to cool. Place in fridge to cool until ready to use.

On a small plate spread salt.  With lime wedges moisten rim of 6  ounce glasses.  Dip glasses into  salt.   Place glasses into freezer to chill.

In a pitcher add to the watermelon juice the tequila, lime juice and Cointreau. Remove glasses from freezer and serve margarita mixture over  ice. Garnish with lime slices.

  2. Hi! I was wondering if you could tell me how many watermelons would make 2 cups of watermelon juice. Do you just put the watermelon in a blender/food processor? I would love to make these this weekend! Thanks!

    • Hi Natalie,

for 2 cups of watermleon juice you will need about 4 cups of sliced watermelon. If you can find the small seedless watermlon that would be perfect. If not a medium one will do fine and you could also juice the remaining watermelon and make ice cubes for your margarita. Yes, place the watermelon in blender or F processor and blend, strain if you are using a seeded melon. Enjoy!

  8. I make aguas frescas with watermelon and one jalapeno. Now I can’t drink watermelon without jalapeno; it is simply additive. I also make paletas with it as well.

    • Hola Mary!! My first thought was to make an agua with sandia y serrano, but with so many kiddos margaritas was needed, lol Thanks for stopping by, true they are addicting!
