Saturday’s at our house have become quite interesting.
Like clockwork on Saturday we get out of bed and slowly convene to the kitchen table.
Saturdays’ have become our day to relax and unwind.
We each have our roles and take them very seriously….
Hubby is in charge of our coffee bar…
Chuls is in charge of picking out a recipe, she arranges the ingredients and patiently awaits while her groggy mommy sips coffee to join her in the kitchen..
Pips dances around the table, pulls out every toy she owns and plays all her favorite music..she’s the entertainments part of the show…
We declare ourselves unavailable, we detactch from the fast paced world, unwind and enjoy a savory breakfast together. I know these Saturday’s will become fewer as activities are planned, school begins for hubby and schedules are once again busy.
But until then we will sit around our tiny table, pass our maple syrup and listen to all of pip’s favorite music.
Enjoy your next Saturday with whole wheat poppy seed waffles and papaya- grapefruit juice.
A beautifully easy juice is made from throwing chunks of papaya and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice into the blender. Sweeten your juice with agave or sugar to your taste or leave unsweetened for a tart twist.
The waffle batter includes poppy seeds, yogurt and lemon zest all mix together to produce a slighlty sweet – tummy filling waffle.
The speckles from the poppy seeds add a small crunch to the waffle, which go well with maple syrup.
Poppy Seed Waffles
from Eating Well
makes 6 servings
2 tbsp poppy seeds
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour (I switched to whole wheat, and it worked fine)
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 large egg whites
1 large egg
2 cups nonfat plain yogurt
1/2 cup sugar
1 tbsp canola oil (i used olive oil)
1 tbsp vanilla extract
2 tsp freshly grated lemon zest
1. preheat waffle iron. preheat oven to 200 degrees
2. toast poppy seeds in a small dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant, 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer to a mixing bowl and whisk in flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
3. whisk egg whites, egg, yogurt, sugar, oil, vanilla and lemon zest in a medium bowl. Whisk into dry ingredients until just moistened (important slightly mix, I even let it rest for 5 minutes)
4. lightly coat waffle iron with cooking spray. spoon in batter and cook until waffle is crisp and golden. transfer to oven to keep warm. repeat with remaining batter, lightly coating iron with nonstick spray each time.
5. add berries, syrup, agave or whatever floats your boat and ENJOY!!
You’ve just confirmed why I need to buy a waffle iron. Thank you!!!
And your Saturday sounds awesome 🙂
Smelling waffles through the monitor… la dee da xoxo
Your Saturdays sound absolutely beautiful, it’s great that you make use of the time you have now =).
Very yummy-looking treats you got there, by the way ;).

Very organised Saturday with lovely breakfast. I’m just drooling over that beautiful, ripe papaya. It’s so delicious! I really miss it. We used to plant it back home when we were young. I can’t wait to go back for holiday to eat lots of them 😀
Sounds like heaven Bonnie! You know reading your post, makes me think my life would be very different if I had 3 daughters instead of 3 sons *walks away musing*
Your mornings sound heavenly! And so do these waffles. I have been trying to convince my husband that waffles can have ‘stuff’ in them and still be yummy. So far minimal success, but maybe these are the waffles to change his mind.
I could live on pimento cheese and queso.
What a civilized way to spend a Saturday morning. Everything looks and sounds wonderful. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings…Mary
I am exactly the same way except our wind down day is Sunday! I love getting up making breakfast and when we have children someday, I hope they will help in the kitchen!!
A wonderful breakfast! Perfect Saturday mornings!
Cheers,
Rosa
I love Saturdays too and I’m sure I’d love them even more with those waffles!
The whole wheat poppy seed waffles sound wonderful. I know I’d love that papaya- grapefruit juice. A healthy and inviting breakfast.
Oh, the papaya-grapefruit juice looks so refreshing! GO CHULS! She’s so creative–I love it!
Papaya juice have such a taste of home for me, in Brazil that’s how we start our morning. Loved that you combined it with grapefruit. And your breakie looks fantastic.
Beautiful breakfast!!
What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning. I’ve never tried papaya juice. It looks delicious. I really like the idea of adding lemon to the waffles to brighten up the flavor.
I like that papaya and grapefruit juice. I actually bought a papaya for the weekend too and it was so good….. Those waffles look amazing too!
Papaya with grapefruit…mmmmm. Our Saturdays are spent rushing off to soccer and or these days, up at 4:30 a.m. to go to a horse show (I’m an eventer). So I’ll just read your blog and dream for August when life settles down again.
Healthy breakfast! I love the addition of poppy seeds in waffels!
I am a waffle fiend.
Papaya is one of my three fav tropical fruits. I never tried grapefuit with it…might just be something for me to try next time.
Your waffle recipe sounds very promising, however personally, I’ll have to omit the pain in the teeth poppy seeds, sorry for that.
I really enjoyed your post…first time visit.
The quinoa burgers got me here from another food blogger. Isn’t the world small ;o)
Thanks for sharing and flavourful wishes, Claudia
Lol that’s so sweet. 🙂 And everything looks deeelish!
Hey Bonnie & Chuls,
This papaya drink sounds awesome. You know, I have a papaya tree near my house that gets these huge papaya fruits on it each summer. I’ve got my eye on it every time I go on a walk to see how they’re coming along.
By the way, I’m linking to you in my next post. Please do check it out to make sure your’e okay with it. The post should be up later today!
Poppy seeds in waffles sound just wonderful! I was looking for poppy seeds at the store last week and couldn’t find them. I must find some this weekend! Your photos are making me crave poppy seed pancakes.
I’m going to have to try those poppy seeds in waffles. Had to chuckle about Pips. 🙂
I love poppy seeds. As a kid, I woke up with a serious poppy seed infused staple. Pasta, covered with TONS of poppy seeds mixed with sugar. That’s it. Incredibly delicious and simple. Your waffles look AMAZING! 🙂
Can I spend saturday mornings with you? They sound like a blast.
Those waffles are exactly what I want to wake up to. Every day. Delicious!
This is a wonderful breakfast…I have a juicer that hardly ever gets used…I’ll have to try your juice blend…it sounds really good.
lemon and poppy seed waffles–how excellent! i’ve enjoyed muffins and loaf breads using that combination, so i know that the same flavors smothered with maple syrup would be even better. 🙂
Great minds think alike! ;D
I love poppy seeds in pancakes and waffles. I’ll have to try your recipe next weekend. Your juice blend also sounds delicious!
I want saturday morning breakfast at your house! Sounds like you guys have a great routine. What wonderful family bonding time. xo
Papaya-grape fruit juice….what a refresher.
Great breakfast! My coffee maker is exactly like yours ^_^
The Papaya and grapefruit juice looks soooo beautiful!! I guess I’ve never bought a papaya. I don’t know why. I often buy mangoes, but I should try a papaya next time!
Looks like a fantastic breakfast. I could wake up to that.
Cheers!

For us the relaxing morning is usually Sunday, since we spend Saturday morning at the Farmer’s market.
These waffles sound tasty! My man is the waffle maker in the house, so I’ll save this recipe for the weekend… hey this is just in time for the long weekend. Brilliant!
