With dinner, on the porch, for lunch or brunch yellow watermelon lemonade is the perfect summer sipper. Feel free to add a shot of tequila or vodka for a spiked version.
WHAT ARE YELLOW WATERMELONS?
On the outside yellow watermelons look identical to red watermelon, but as soon as you slice you are hit with the most stunning pineapple -yellowish color.
Traditional watermelons get their bright red hue from lycopene, the same antioxidant that makes tomatoes and grapefruits red. yellow watermelons, however, do not contain lycopene, so they never take on a reddish color.
Both varieties are high in vitamin A and C, yellow watermelon may lack lycopene, but the contain plenty of beat carotene.
And the question I am asked often.
WHAT DOES A YELLOW WATERMELON TASTE LIKE?
Yellow watermelons taste a bit sweeter, with notes of honey, apricot, and caramel with a softer texture than red watermelon.
DOES A YELLOW WATERMELON TASTE LIKE A RED WATERMELON?
There is a slight difference in taste from red to yellow. Both varieties come in seeded and seedless version, you will see this listed on the produce tag.
Feel free to use yellow watermelon as you would use red watermelon – in salads, smoothies, juiced or in lemonade. I like to slice & mix for a beautiful platter for brunch on Sunday.
TIPS ON SELECTING A WATERMELON
Find the field spot: Watermelons develop a spot where they rest on the field before they are picked. Look for a creamy, dull, yellow field spot this indicates the watermelon is ripe. This spot shows where the watermelon sat as it ripened.
Inspect the stem: the watermelon stem should be yellowish brown, which shows the watermelon is mature and has had time to ripen. A green fresher stem signifies the watermelon is not yet ripe.
Knock, Knock: My papi does this, so I do this. Give your watermelon a gentle tap, If the watermelon sounds hollow you got a ripe one, if your watermelon sounds dense the watermelon is not yet ripe.
WHEN ARE YELLOW WATERMELONS IN SEASON?
The best time to purchase this fruit is during its peak season, which lasts between May and September. The exact months depend on where you live, but here in Texas our season is May to September. Personally, I purchase my watermelons June to August, I find they are the sweetest June-August.
