Atole de Avena

Atole de Avena   Growing up when the days became shorter and the mornings were chilly my mother would make us Avena before we headed out for school.   Milky oatmeal laced with cinnamon and piloncillo served in a coffee mug was the perfect method to soothe us before a long day in class.   I always felt a bit more grown up sipping my avena from a coffee cup alongside my dad while he had his morning coffee.  The thick, steamy avena would hit your pancita and be just the thing needed to hold you over until lunch time.  Sometimes we would… Read More

Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate

Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate   We are slowly putting together our altar this year for Dia de Los Muertos.  This day is dedicated to reflecting on the lives of loved ones we have lost.  We celebrate their lives and rejoice in their memories.  This year our altar will be filled with sugar skulls, marigolds, candles, papel picado and personal mementos.  I hope that with sharing my families past my girls will learn about their culture, grow to appreciate their heritage and remember those who came before them.   Last week my girls made Dia de Los Muertos mugs and… Read More

DIY ~ Dia de Los Muertos Mugs

Dia de Los Muertos is fast approaching and I wanted to share an activity I did with the kids.  I found this gem on Pinterest and knew it would be perfect for hot chocolate.  Few supplies are needed which is always a plus.  I picked up a few coffee mugs at our local dollar store, handed the kiddos a few sharpies and we were on our way! I did try to print, cut and transfer a skull stencil to the mug, but found it difficult to maneuver. Free hand was the best option. The kids had a blast and I… Read More
